We all know that sleep is a crucial part of living our best and healthiest lives, especially for parents and expecting parents. Sleep boosts our immune systems, promotes good mental health, decreases stress, and eases marital tension…but is your bedroom arranged for the best sleep possible? With so many of us spending much more time at home (and, let’s be honest, probably itching for a little home makeover), now’s the perfect time to look into bedroom Feng Shui.

Instead of taking on a new TV show to binge or scrolling Instagram, why not dedicate a little time to changing the Feng Shui of your sleeping environment? You might be delightfully surprised by how much Feng Shui can help you get a better sleep.

    What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of directing energy in such a way that a person can become harmonized with their environment. The idea is that energy is like moving water or air, in fact the words ‘feng’ and ‘shui’ translate to water and air, respectively. If the energy gets stuck and is unable to flow correctly then it can get stagnant and that can result in leaving a person feeling drained and unmotivated.

How to Feng Shui Your Bedroom

Modern Feng Shui as a design tool for living combines the Western lens of psychology with the ancient Chinese philosophy of Tao to give a practitioner the ability to focus on specific areas of their life to fix with Feng Shui tweaks. For example, if you can’t sleep because you’re 8 months pregnant and this quarantine has you feeling super anxious. According to the practice of Feng Shui, you can make a few adjustments to your bedroom to redirect the energy to help you get a decent night’s sleep.

The Ideal Feng Shui Bedroom Layout

Invest in a bed big enough for you relax in, try a king size if you have the space. Be sure to be able to walk around three sides of the bed and that the side you get in on has plenty of space so you don’t feel crowded. Make sure your bed is placed in the center of a wall and that it is out of line with the door. You want to see the door from where you lay but you don’t want to be in a direct line with in.

The Optimal Feng Shui Bedroom Colors

Use soft, muted colors that feel relaxing and soothing to you. Find bedroom colors that make you think of peaceful thoughts. Try to avoid pops of loud color and bright lights. In fact, if you can, use dim lights or even battery-operated candles, that is even better.

    Other Feng Shui Bedroom Rules

Remove anything that doesn’t naturally belong in a bedroom. Mirrors, bookcases, desks, electronics, and the like should all be removed. All closet doors and drawers should be closed to keep the space feeling clutter free and quiet. And if you like to read before sleep then only keep the book you’re currently reading in your room.

Feng Shui can be a soothing and relaxing tool especially when combined with good sleep hygiene like avoiding sugar and alcohol before bed, going to bed at the same time every night, and taking a few moments to stretch and breathe deeply. Before you know it, your bedroom can easily become a space of tranquility where sleep is the name of the game.
